Male Breast Reduction for Gynecomastia San Diego

Gynecomastia is the medical term for enlarged male breasts. This condition can be very embarrassing for a man. He may avoid being in public places with his shirt off, for example the swimming pool or San Diego’s beaches. Fortunately, this condition is treatable and the enlarged breast can be reduced.

Who gets gynecomastia?
It is not unusual for adolescent males to have some degree of breast enlargement during puberty when the hormone levels are rapidly changing. Normally this will improve over one to two years and does not require treatment. However, if the breast size does not regress, surgical treatment is indicated. Gynecomastia can also develop later in life – after about age 50. The breasts enlarge gradually with time and this is typically related to overall weight gain and decrease in circulating testosterone levels. Some medications and drugs can directly cause breast enlargement. When gynecomastia develops suddenly in an otherwise healthy male, additional work-up will be required and you may need to see your family physician as well as an endocrinologist.

How is surgery done?
The surgical technique used to treat gynecomastia is highly dependent on your specific findings. Liposuction and direct surgical excision are the most common techniques used to treat enlarged male breasts. Mild cases can be treated with liposuction alone. Some patients may require excision of the disk of tissue that sits immediately below the nipple, so an incision will need to be created around the areola (pigmented area). More extreme cases include men that have undergone bariatric weight loss surgery (lap-band or gastric bypass surgery), where there is excess tissue and skin – this nearly always has to excised directly and may require longer scars to achieve better contour.

Recovery
Surgery for gynecomastia is performed as an outpatient surgery. You will need to wear compression vests for a few weeks to reduce the risk of fluid collections and improve the contour. Overall patients are very satisfied with the improved shape and the enhanced self-esteem. Call out plastic surgery center to see if you are a candidate for surgery.
