Breast augmentation and capsular contracture explained for patients in Beverly Hills, CA

Breast augmentation involves the placement of breast implants to enhance and improve the shape and size of your breasts.

When you look good, you feel good. For many women, breast augmentation surgery is a way to feel better about the way they look. Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly requested cosmetic surgery procedures. Firmer, fuller breasts can balance a woman’s appearance, making her feel more confident in her appearance. Clothes look and fit better. She feels more comfortable in her own skin. For patients in Beverly Hills, CA, Dr. Dennis Dass offers breast augmentation surgery to help women achieve the curves and look they deserve.

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation involves the placement of breast implants to enhance and improve the shape and size of your breasts. It may restore lost breast volume following weight loss or pregnancy. Patients with small or asymmetrical breasts are good candidates for breast implants. The goal is to achieve larger, fuller, more symmetrical breasts. Breast implants improve the fullness and projection of your breasts, balance your curves to produce an hourglass figure, and enhance a patient’s self-confidence. Every woman has a unique body shape. With the precise detail of a surgeon and the eye of an artist, Dr. Dass is able to select the most appropriate implant size and shape for the individual patient.

Breast implants come in various materials, styles, shapes, and sizes. Implant materials include saline, silicone, and gummy bear. Each is safe, but has a different texture or feeling of fullness. Round or teardrop shapes are available to alter your profile. Implants may be smooth or textured. During your initial appointment, your surgeon will help you choose an appropriate implant style and shape based on your body type and desired outcome.

  • Saline – Saline implants are empty when placed into the breast cavity. They are then filled with sterile water.
  • Silicone – Also called gel implants, silicone implants are filled
with a plastic gel, giving the breasts a firm yet soft, natural feel.
  • Gummy bear – Gummy bear implants are quickly becoming popular. While
still a silicone-based product, gummy bear implants maintain the
natural look and feel of silicone implants. However, this product is
slightly firmer and will not deflate even if the outer shell ruptures.

Breast augmentation and capsular contracture

Breast augmentation does come with risks and the possibility of needing breast implant removal. Patients may choose to or may need to have their breast implants removed for various reasons. It may be a personal choice in no longer wanting implants or wanting a different size. Implant removal may also be medically necessary if there are complications. Capsular contracture is one reason for breast implant removal.

A breast implant is technically a foreign object in your body. Every patient’s body responds differently to the placement of this foreign object. After the implant is placed, scar tissue forms a capsule around the implant during the healing process. For most patients, this never causes a problem. However, in other instances, this capsule can tighten or contract. The amount of tightening that occurs is unpredictable and varies from patient to patient. Capsular contracture can occur in one or both breasts. The type of implant used does not matter. If contracting does happen, it may cause discomfort as well as visible problems in the breast. Symptoms of capsular contracture after breast augmentation include:

  • Hardening of the breast
  • Pain
  • Sensitivity to touch
  • Wrinkling or distortion of the breast
  • Displacement of the breast implant

Capsular contracture treatment options

Dr. Dennis Dass help you achieve balanced curves and the shapely body you desire.

Capsular contracture only occurs in about five percent of women who undergo breast augmentation surgery. Recommendations may include massaging the breast to break up the scar tissue. For more severe cases, the implant is surgically removed. When possible, the surgeon uses the original incision site to remove the implant. Sometimes a larger incision is needed. The entire implant is removed and then the scar tissue is excised. The procedure can be completed with or without the placement of new implants or a breast lift. Having capsular contracture with one set of implants does not mean it will occur again with a new breast augmentation surgery.
