Trans-umbilical breast augmentation (TUBA) is a technique where breast implants are placed without creating a scar on the breasts. Traditional approaches create a scar in the breast crease, around the areola, or in the armpit. With TUBA, the implants are inserted through a small incision in the belly button, or navel. The incision is placed within the umbilical hood, so that the scar is less than an inch long and is nearly imperceptible. Breast augmentation through the navel is an ideal technique for women that have small breasts and desire saline breast implants. Silicone gel breast implants cannot be placed through the belly button. This is because saline (salt water) implants are filled at the time of surgery, whereas silicone implants come prefilled. TUBA is an excellent option for women that form poor scars, because there will be no scars on the breast. TUBA can be performed in conjunction with a tummy tuck, as part of a mommy makeover; in fact, a lot of women choose this option.

During surgery, two small tunnels are created from the umbilicus to each breast and the implant pocket is carefully created. The saline implants are rolled up and advanced into each respective pocket, and the implant is placed under the muscle. The implants are filled with IV saline fluid through fill tubes, and the fill tubes are removed. The recovery time is about 1 week.
