Frequently asked questions about the breast lift procedure
At the office of Dr. Dennis Dass, women who are tired of their sagging breasts and excess skin may want to consult with a professional about undergoing the breast lift procedure. This treatment is designed to lift the chest higher and, in some cases, reposition the nipple and areola at the same time. This results in a more youthful look while maintaining natural contours. Let’s look at some frequently asked questions about the breast lift procedure performed by our board-certified plastic surgeon.
What is a breast lift?
Also known as mastopexy, a breast lift is a surgical technique designed to elevate and rejuvenate the entire breast, nipple/areola complex, or both to a more desirable, youthful stature on the chest wall. This procedure is especially beneficial for individuals experiencing ptosis (drooping) breasts, which is common post-nursing or after significant weight loss.
Are all breast lifts the same?
Absolutely, not! There is a spectrum of breast lift techniques, and the most suitable one for you will hinge on the extent of your sagging and your desired lift level. A traditional breast lift involves removing excess skin from the lower breast area and reducing the size of the areola surrounding the nipple. Afterward, your nipple and areola are repositioned to a more elevated location on your breast. Subsequently, skin from the upper breast region is relocated to the lower hemisphere of your breast for enhanced support. The perceptible aftermath includes scars encircling the areola, descending directly from the areola to the breast crease, and following the line of the crease. While it may seem as though your nipple and areola have been detached, they are, in fact, still connected to the underlying breast tissue.

Can the breast lift procedure be performed at the same time as the placement of breast implants?
Indeed, it’s not unusual for breast implants to be inserted during a breast lift procedure. However, you should be aware that combining these two treatments might restrict the size of the implant that can be accommodated. Performing these procedures together may also increase certain risks, including unevenness, implant misplacement, and potential infection or expulsion of the implant.
Will a breast lift or breast augmentation inhibit the ability to spot breast cancer in the future?
It’s important to understand that even though the appearance of the breast on a mammogram might be different after a breast lift surgery, it doesn’t bring about any challenges in the detection of breast cancer. The technique continues to remain as effective and precise as before. The change in the image is merely a manifestation of the surgical modification in the breast’s shape and position and not a hindrance to finding potential health threats like breast cancer.
