Beverly Hills, CA physician explains the expected recovery and results for liposuction surgery
Types of liposuction
Body contouring and fat reduction procedures have been taken to the next level. There are more options, including traditional liposuction surgery, tumescent liposuction, laser liposuction, and non-invasive body contouring. Patients have unique needs based on the areas to be addressed, the amount of fat, the overall cost, and the amount of downtime necessary. Traditional liposuction is usually performed under general anesthesia. Tumescent liposuction uses local anesthetics to make the fat firm and swollen while numbing the treatment site. Small incisions are made to insert a small tube called a cannula that vacuums out the fat cells. Ultrasound or laser procedures utilize advanced technology and energy to liquefy and suction out the fat. During liposuction, fat cells are removed in order to reshape or contour the body. Liposuction is not a weight loss program to eliminate large amounts of fat. It is ideal for patients with a small pocket of fat or a problem zone that just will not go away without a little extra help. Common treatment areas include:- Abdomen
- Flanks
- Thighs
- Knees
- Buttocks
- Arms
- Under the chin

Liposuction recovery and results
A consultation with Dr. Dass is required. He will listen to your questions, concerns, and expectations. The amount of fat to be removed and your expectations will help determine the most appropriate procedure for your needs. Having a realistic goal is important for any procedure. It helps you know what to expect, how you may heal, and what results you may achieve with a given treatment. Regardless of which liposuction procedure you undergo, the recovery is similar. Liposuction is an outpatient surgery. Following the procedure, a compression garment is worn over the treatment area to help minimize swelling. It also helps compress the skin to your new contours. The compression garment is worn for about 6 weeks. For some patients, small drains may be placed to remove excess blood or fluid. The drains are only used temporarily. Bruising and swelling are the most common side effects. These may be present for a few weeks as the body heals. Patients will be given specific post-procedure instructions. These will include how to care for the treatment area and any drains that are used. The procedure is not particularly painful, but the treatment area may be tender or sore. Medications may be taken to help with discomfort, aid in healing, and reduce the possibility of infections. There may be restrictions on movement or exercise. Generally speaking, walking around beginning the day of your procedure aids in healing, reduces complications, and helps prevent blood clots. Your doctor will give you specific instructions regarding strenuous exercise or physical activity. Most patients can return to work within 3 days. Every patient heals differently. The amount of fat removed, and the exact treatment areas can impact the healing process. The more areas that are treated, the longer the recovery period may be. Fat cells that are removed with liposuction will not grow back in the same area. Once the body heals, the results are Visible. This means that even if you gain weight, it will not show in the treatment area. It may take a few months for the swelling to fully go down. However, as the swelling is reduced, your newly contoured body shape will appear and will continue to develop. Although liposuction does not replace a healthy lifestyle, it can help dispose of pockets of unwanted fat or problem zones. Ask Dr. Dass if you are a suitable candidate for liposuction to get the contours you desire.
