Male breast reduction procedure reduces the size of breasts for men in Beverly Hills, California

When adults hear of the procedure “breast reduction,” they often relate it to women who have abnormally large breasts and want to reduce their breast size for medical and personal reasons. However, men may also suffer from enlarged breasts if they are diagnosed with a condition called gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is when men have excessive breast tissue on the chest. Beverly Hills, CA area doctor, Dr. Dennis Dass, offers a way for men to reduce their breast size with male breast reduction.

Why might a patient consider male breast reduction?

Women with large breasts often suffer from medical issues such as back and neck pain and may experience the inability to participate in certain activities because of the size of their breasts. Men with excess breast tissue will often have no medical reason to have them reduced. Instead, male breast reduction is considered a cosmetic procedure. It can help men feel more confident in their bodies, especially in situations where they may be without a shirt. It may be at the pool or on the beach. Breast enlargement can be the source of bullying in teenagers and can make adults feel self-conscious about their overall appearance. At this point, patients come to the practice of Dr. Dennis Dass to seek assistance.

What is done during male breast reduction?

The procedure for male breast reduction often includes two different surgical options for patients to choose from, including:

  • Liposuction – liposuction is used to remove excess breast fat, but not breast tissue. It is performed by using a special tube-like device called a cannula that is connected to a canister. The device suctions out the excess fat cells to allow the plastic surgeon to contour the area into a more masculine appearance.
  • Mastectomy – for patients with more breast gland tissue than breast fat, a mastectomy may be recommended. A mastectomy removes breast gland tissue and is often less invasive than liposuction.

In addition to removing breast fat and breast gland tissue, men with large areolas may also want to reduce the size of the pigmented skin around the nipples. It can be done during the same procedure, allowing patients to recover once for two different treatments.
